Take a few lev with you to tide you over for the first few hours, but you will get a far better exchange rate in Bulgaria. Use ATMs to withdraw cash. Or you can take sterling with you and change it over there. You usually get quite a good rate in the hotels, but do be very careful changing it on the street in the booths - they can charge a hefty fee.

Where are you going? From all the previous posts here on this subject it seems like there is only one 'safe' exchange booth in Borovets, but if you are going to Bansko or Pamps that won't be relevant to you!

In Borovets, there are safe banks and ATMs in the Rila, Samokov and Flora hotels. I always stick to those and have never had any problems. Booths with a CROWN sysmbol are meant to be safe.
