PFC Litex (Lovech) lost 0-2 vs AZ Alkmaar, but achieved a historic success in the UEFA Cup tournament. The 'Orange team' from Lovecch qualified for the 1/16-finals of the UEFA tournament after Grasshoppers lost 2-3 vs Dnipro.
The match pitted together two collosal European coaches - Louis van Gaal and Ljupko Petrovic, and it was the AZ coach who drew first blood when Barry van Galen handed the visitors a tenth-minute lead. Litex looked to respond but their hopes were all but ended when Robert Popov was dismissed midway through the second half. Tarik Sektioui then doubled AZ's lead on 82 minutes as Van Gaal's side joined Middlesbrough at the Group D summit.
"We have a great coach. Ljupko Petrovic is responsible for this great success. We will try to sign some new players during the winter recess, because our substitute bench is rather problematic now. I congratulate the whole team on this success," said Litex owner Grisha Ganchev.
