Bird flu is the main topic of conversation in our country today; people discuss it everywhere - at home, in restaurants, shops and buses. The media never miss to announce the hot news connected with the deadly disease. But we know - this is the successive nine days' wonder. It won't be a long time before this theme is forgotten like many others. Warm weather will chase bird flu away, say experts from the National Vet Service.
The flocks that have lived through the winter in Bulgaria will start returning to the north where they use to spend the summer days. According to Zheko Baichev, head of the National Vet Service, there's no threat that the sick birds, which leave Turkey, pass through Bulgaria on their way back to their summer habitats, because the flocks never change their routes of migration. The birds which fly away from Turkey pass via the Ukraine. Bulgaria is the winter harbour of ducks and geese whose air route passes through Romania.
"Even if the contaminated birds delay their departure, the possibility of transmitting the disease to domestic fowl is reduced to minimum," vets say. It's enough if the poultry are isolated and don't have any contact with wild birds.
"All the necessary measures have been taken; people are well aware of the deadly consequences of a possible H5N1 infection and pay due attention to our recommendations," Dr. Baichev explained.
