Temperatures drop below - 20°C, plants freeze, snow and ice cripple the country, and torrential rains ruin the crops. This is only a portion of meteorologists' apocalyptic forecasts taking a central place in this year's press. Scared by the recent floods, people are stockpiling en masse firewood and coal, anticipating Siberian cold.
Foreign meteorologists' forecasts have also aggravated Bulgarians' worries of looming incredibly cold weather. In France some announced this would be coldest winter in Europe for the last 15 years. Englishmen raised the period to 60 years. Americans predicted hurricanes along the Atlantic coast that would influence the climate sharply.
"Europe will become a desert," meteorologists portended a few days ago.
Such a forecast cannot be really made, countered experts from the Bulgarian Hydrology and Meteorology Institute with the Bulgarian Academy of Science (BAS). "No one can make such an apocalyptic forecast on the sole basis of meteorological data. Rather, the colleagues would like to raise money for further research and threaten politicians with stunning predictions," meteorologist Latin Latinov told the Standart.
There are no reasons for expecting disastrous cold. All realistic forecasts cover a period of five or six days. Data for extraordinary cold weather can be drawn if there are such indicators in the autumn. We have no such facts for this season. Apocalyptic visions aiming at fund raising is another matter, according to the meteorologists from the Academy.

I'm in the last year of a part time degree at the moment and doing my dissertation on the possible slow down or total shut down of the Atlantic conveyor. Won't go into detail but, if it were to happen we could be in for a mini ice age like the one between the 1600s and 1850s. Basicly if the golf stream stops bringing warm water up from the south stops we're in for the ski seasons we can only dream about.
Predictions of future very cold weather are real but unproven.
