Folklore Patterns in the Logo of Sofia's Candidature
Folklore patterns underlie in the logo of Sofia's candidature to host the Winter Olympic Games in 2014.
Yesterday, the artist of the project, Georgi Yankov, explained that the idea originated from the Shopp and the Macedonian folkloric embroideries - depicted through the seesaw white stripe.
The white stripes symbolize the winter sports. While the three green peaks in the emblem stand for the mountains - Rila, Pirin and Vitosha, where the races will be held. The blue color in the emblem represents the sky. The sun comes in the middle of the logo.
The logo will be shown in different sizes - from the size of a pen to enormous billboards.
The papers on Sofia's candidature were sent to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland on Saturday. The end of the first phase of the competition is on June, 22, 2006.
Until then, a special working group of the IOC, including experts and representatives of the international sports federations will evaluate the merits of the candidatures.
Three or four of the all seven nominations will continue to compete in the second phase.
