Bulgaria Freezes at Minus 20 C

Siberian cold froze Bulgaria Monday. Schools in more than half of the country closed for heating reasons even before the Ministry of Education officially allowed it.
A record cold was registered in northeastern Bulgaria where temperatures plunged to almost minus 20 C.
Power plants work at fivefold bigger capacity than usual. The cold forced 18 municipalities to close the schools. The lowest temperatures today morning will range between minus 13C and minus 18C and in places in northeastern Bulgaria the thermometer is expected to drop to minus 22 C. The highest temperatures during the day will range from minus 8 to minus 13.

Mummers Inaugurate the 52nd World Ski Tournament for Journalists
The arctic cold weather did not scare the competitors in the 52nd World Ski Tournament for journalists. Despite the heavy snow falls the hosts from Julen had prepared the ski runs perfectly. Everyone used the last minutes to train for today's giant slalom. The Bansko municipality will make the world headlines with its unique inauguration ceremony. The mummer dances, the fireworks and Nikolina Chakardakova's concert were the gems of the program. Yesterday there was a discussion about Bulgaria's Euro integration.

Temperatures Drop to New Low in Bulgaria

A wave of Arctic cold spread across the whole Bulgaria on Tuesday when temperatures hit a new low - minus 20 Celsius degrees in the northeastern part of the country.

Harsh weather closed the schools in eighteen Bulgarian districts.
The residents in the Danube town of Russe woke up to minus 19 Celsius degrees in the morning, after a night of acute cold and sharp winds.
The town of Shumen, northeast Bulgaria, is expected to see Tuesday record-low temperatures of minus 22 Celsius degrees.
In neighboring Razgrad the mercury dropped to minus 21 Celsius degrees.
