Safety Devices

Just wondering,

Whilst in Borovets last week, i seemed to fall off the edge slightly.

I was snowboarding down the red run towards the half way station of the gondola, where upon my decent, i quite literally fell off the edge of the run.

Not to much of a problem you might think? Well i fell almost 20ft below the run, and if it wasnt for a tree that stopped me, i could well have been 2000m back down to the bottom!

The snow was a good 80cm deep in this area and therefore hardly anyway of pulling myself back up to the run. I sat there and watched as at least 15-20 boarders/skiers all just went by, and left me there.. (almost all of them saw me as well), 2 of them were borosport instructors and 1 guy even took the time to film me.

None of them though, offered a helpful hand to get me up.

Anyway, my question is; What would have happened if my girlfriend hadnt have heard me calling and managed to use herself to weight me as i pulled myself back up?

Would i have just satyed there and perished, or should i be taking flares etc when i board? it sound a little extreme, but i just dont know. I am aware of the RECCO system in jackets but not everyone has them and i dont understand how they work...

but yeah, thats the question.

Thanks Guys

re: Safety Devices

The RECCO system isn't much good for anything other than finding bodies. The situation you were in sounds a little unusual and no doubt pretty scary. I've never been faced with such a drop before but all I can say as future advice is be carefull at the edge of the piste if you're not sure what the drop is like. Presume the light may well have been bad as well, be extra carefull in such conditions particualry if yuo're riding o/p.

If you're interested in avalanche saftery devices you want transceivers rather than RECCO, give me a shout and I can post you soem good links.
Hope you had a good one (near death experience aside!)
