Am hoping that by being this prepared I could be pleasantly surprised????
I went this time last year, it was fine the rooms were clean, didnt stink of smoke. Food was pretty naff but just about edible but to be honest I think a lot of the Hotels are much of a muchness. Rooms dont have kettles - this has been confirmed by several sources handy for the ski school.
Would suggest you budget for eating out for quite a few of the evenings saying that we were eating with the ski class on a dinner time and then making do on an evening and just getting all vital ...

We stayed at the Samokov for our first visit to Bulgaria in November 2004. We chose it as it appeared, on paper, to be the best hotel in Borovets at the time. It was rated as 4*. We were there on a B&B basis. The breakfast was awful, very poor quality. We were glad that we weren't half board. The room itself was very shabby. The bedlinen was of such poor quality and so rough that it scratched your skin when you moved. We were very unimpressed. I would hope that things have improved now. Back ...

Back in 2004 there wasn't really much competition. But now there are quite a few new hotels so the Samokov ought to have improved, if it expects to continue to get business.I notice that Inghams are still including it in their ski brochure for 2010/2011 and calling it 4* .Maybe this suggests that it has improved.
It really depends what sort of standard you are expecting.
Thanks guys.
Well I sort of understand that Bulgaria's standards and ratings are completely not the same as british ones and im great with that. Am only really trying to prep myself so that im not going to be disappointed with anything.
2004 was a bit of a distance away, almost 6 years so i really hope they have improved in that time.
Thanks JC for that will definitely look forward to the pancakes.....love them.
Must admitt am a bit surprised about the no kettles

We've stayed in the Samokov 3 times and I have to say after returning home last Sat there have been improvements. The food is much better, fresher and much warmer. Last year we didn't eat in the hotel at all but this year had every breakfast and most evening meals, when we weren't out with friends.
Yes, you could pick lots of holes but its in a great location, there are plenty of staff and I can't wait to go back....
