Thanks for all the feed back. I did think samakov was a bit ugly but that is something you get used to. Its just a bit of a suprise at first as it is a big contrast to western europe. But I found the ugliness is no reflection on the type of people who live there. Areas that are ugly in the UK are generally full of undesirable types. This is not so in Bulgaria I found. Also when I was there, there was no snow, I think the presence of snow in winter and greenery in summer would do a lot to make Samakov prettier looking. I think samakov will develop rapidly particularily if this Super Borevets project goes ahead. When I was there there didnt seem to be anything happening. Is it on hold or is it just hype? A bulgarian bloke told me it might not go ahead or be delayed for years due to all the organisations involved not being able to agree with each other. What does everyone else think? Anyone have any insider knowledge they would like to share?
The project was started by Iliya Pavlov but he was shot in 2003 which delayed things. There was rumoured to be involvement from the drug dealer Samokovetska (from the town of Samokov) as he owned a number of hotels in Borovets, but he was shot in 2005. Its main backer was Emil Kyulev but he was shot in 2006 which delayed things further. The King has had a lot of the forests restituted to himself but people are not happy about this and he'll probably be shot sooner or later.

See the trend?
Something will happen some time, but nothing like the 300 million extravaganza they are talking of.
Samokov is a sh1t hole any time of year and way too many gypsies, but that's standard for most small towns. Bulgaria as an investment destination has had its day so although development will come, it won't come soon
what a load of c**p !! mat you may be in Sofia, but that doesnt stop you talking garbage.
Whilst areas of Samokov are not that pretty, its reflected over most of BG.
The Super Borovets project will go ahead, because the EU will fund a lot of it. The area has high unemployment and so will be the beneficiary of a lot of EU money. As for BG having had its day for investment, i think you may well find its only just starting sunshine, with cheap labour and its proximity to europe, a lot of ...

The Super Borovets project will go ahead, because the EU will fund a lot of it. The area has high unemployment and so will be the beneficiary of a lot of EU money. As for BG having had its day for investment, i think you may well find its only just starting sunshine, with cheap labour and its proximity to europe, a lot of companies are flooding in to build factories. Over the lasr few years i have seen a remarkable differance in Samokov, and the place is getting more and more affluent, i cant see this trend reversing. And the new sports complex (largest in the Balkans) will bring more kudos to the town as well. Its not all about brits buying a few houses you know.
read the post properly, and far from swallowing a load of whatever from real estate agents, it happens to be quite the opposite, i obviously spend far more time there than you do, and obviously know the area a lot better.
ps, theres a large investment in a factory at the moment from one of the largest electrical manufacturers in europe , try finding out, that will keep you busy for a bit
