If you are plannin gon skiing/boarding off piste then I would DEFINITELY advise you to buy these pieces of equipment. I ski off piste and have invested in similar equipment and know that one day it may just save my life. Seriously, if you plan on going off piste, especially when the avalnache risk is fairly high, then you don't want to go anywhere near the slope without digging in to check the snowpack and associated avalanche risk before venturing off piste and carrying a tranceiver, shovel ...

It would be foolish to do otherwise. I have lost mountaineering friends to such folly, so don't do it!
I've got an X1 as pictured on that page. I need to practise with it more - infact I've just thought - if conditions aren't that great I may well spend some time doing that.
Same as what Board and Horn have said. Only if you are going of piste. What is even more valuable than this kit are courses that teach you to be aware of risks (avalanches and survival) and also remember that this kit by itself will not keep you safe. You NEED to know how to use it.
