Can anyone recommend a place to hire skis and boots from apart from at the Gondola. Last year we hired from Bansko Sports near the top of Pirin Street about 100m from the Gondola but ive been told its closed down. Can't face the thought of a 2 hour queue every morning to pick up equipment from the Gondola, so looking for somewhere else. Thanks in advance.
Be very careful when renting equipment.
Last christmas my wife rented skis at a shop just outside the gondola. She is 55 kgr and a good skier. She told the clerk to tune the skis at DIN 3-4. But she didn't check. After the accident (the binding didn't open, her knee turned) I checked the skis. One was tuned at 5.5 and the other at 8.5. Ignorance about the things they sell or rent is common all over Bansko. Nobody knows how these things (skis, boots, bindings) work. I spent 3 days looking for ski-mountaineering equipment but all the salesmen at ski shops seemed like they had never before heard the term ski-mountaineering or alpine touring. Not even in a shop with a Silvretta sticker on the window. You cannot find nordic ski equipment even though Bansko is a major biathlon center.
Skiing at Bansko was beautiful and the people at our hotel very friendly but I am afraid that most people at ski shops lack professionalism and looked at us as if we were euros with legs. Not to mention some suspiciusly low prices at some very well known brand clothing.
Next time we will be more careful and I recomend the same to you.
