For all those wondering about whether they can take their boots on the plane as hand luggage, below is a response to that very question from Crystal Ski. I fly out tomorrow, Thompson flight from Stansted:

I went to Borovets last week with Crystal. On a thompson flight both ways. I took my boots as hand luggage. I asked at check in they said it was fine. The bag and boots went through security also with no problem. It was fine coming back as well. They did however confiscate a pair of plyers that were at the bottom of my husbands bag. This was most embarrassing. He had used the bag on a fishing trip recently and didn't realise they were still in there.
