It really does depend on the conditions and I would advise taking both on holiday. I have had holidays where I've not even got the goggles out of the bag - however there have been other holidays where I've used nothing but goggles. If its snowing or foggy or very cold you're best off with goggles all the time.
If its blue skies and sun then sunglasses wins for me - I find I get too hot in goggles.

I always ski with a backpack with the goggles in, plus chocolate or snacks for the kids, camera etc. That way you are prepared for all eventualities. This year we will have full face masks too as we got caught out last year when it was -30 on the top on a couple of days!
Personally I use glasses and if It is goggles weather Then use glasses (full of beer in the bar) If you insist on skiing/boarding in inclement weather then goggles are a must.
I bought a pair of goggles come sunglasses from [email protected] were a bit extravagent at £50 but I tested them last week in Cervinia and they were fantastic. Very comfortable and superb vision.
You can always buy sunglasses with interchangeable lenses, Argos sell them for £10, (In the cyclist section of the catalogue), Dark, Yellow or clear lenses. I wear these all the time when cycling or skiing, you just change the lens to suit the conditions.
If i'm skiing on piste and it is sunny with little cold wind then I wear sunglasses. If I am skiing off piste even if the sun is out with little wind I will still wear a very light tinted lense in my goggles.
If the weather is very bad regardless if I am on piste or off piste I will wear my poor visibility lense in my goggles.
