when ive collected my hire gear if the skis were not up to scratch (edges etc and waxed) ive allways asked and they have done it free (all be it a bit disgruntled though!) but that was at Samokov hotel in Borovets- same for kids skis- i think if you talk as though you know what your doing they will get it done rather than the hassle!
Get 'em waxed. Stops 'em sticking to the snow. Makes the difference especially when you need to use your sticks and are trying to skate your way off a long flat or an annoying slope with deep snow slowing you down.
Always worth carrying soem wax with you.
A quick rub of wax on the top sheet also helps to keep snow from sticking and piling up in front and behind your boots.

Contrary to many beliefs; it's not so much about making the skis go faster; it's about allowing the skis to slide like they're supposed to. Helps with turning. and if you can turn more efficiently - you can stop more efficiently.
Rub on - easy to apply and instant - but don't rub on too much at once.
Liquid - good but you need to let it dry.
Paste - probably better than rub on so long as you use it sparingly and allow it to dry and polish it. (dries quicker than liquid.)
zardoz Notwax - Liquid teflon. Excellent choice and probably best except in very dry powder when you're supposed to wipe off the excess with a tissue.
Best: hotwax - textured and rubbed over with liquid teflon. (even better - hot wax - scrape - teflon - hot wax - scrape - teflon) gives a pleasingly fast and accelerating glide even over shallow pistes.
If you're unsure of temperature ranges - use universal wax and or teflon.
