Skiing Helmets.

After the recent death of a skier it's made me think about buying a helmet. I thought on the easier slopes and with an instructor you would be safe but from the recent accidents it appears I was wrong. I can ski the Green, blue and red runs on my own now so think a helmet would be a good idea for me especially as I ski on my own.
Can anyone recomend a good helmet and what sort of prices?

Try ebay and all the big ski / snowboard companies, Bargain boards etc on the internet, some great reductions, Roxy make nice girls helmets as do Pro tec, you measure your head above your ears and eyes and that gives a rough size, get one.

re: Skiing Helmets.

You're looking at the same size as a motorcycle helmet, a guide is a medium is around 58-60cm circumferance of head measured just above the temples. It goes up or down a size in 2cm increments. Any helmet will do as long as it's adequately padded e.g a skateboard one would be ok too.

You will feel safer and probably have even more confidence with a helmet on, it really made a difference for me.

Good luck on the hunt

It's not always how confident you are, nothing to stop an out of control skiier wiping you out from behind. Have to admit I am now seriously thinking of investing for next season, what's going on behind me is always at the back of my mind, and maybe it'll help my confidence.

Yep, your wise to invest jocrad, the only time I have had a lasting injury was from an out of control skier flying through the air, hitting me from behind, my shoulder and head took his full force, I suffered concussion but it would have been worse without my helmet. Paramedics were pretty annoyed with him for not wearing one and he was hospitalised for a week. Sad

It is important to try on helmets before you buy them. They all fit differently. We tried on loads before we found the ones that fitted best. And, remember, we're talking safety here - cheapest does not equate to best.

I've bought a helmet, I'm a good skiier, but it's others that I'm worried about (skiing into me).

Have a look at http://www.kit2fit.com/links/index.asp?id=23 to learn how to measure your helmet size, but remember you can never be sure it'll properly fit unless you try before you buy. Helmet sizes vary with brand, so just remember your sizee in cm. The better brands, Smith, Dainese, Alpina cost a bit more, but it's questionable if that means they are safer. Make sure that it has a safety ...

http://www.snowhead.co.uk/buyer_information/choosing_a_ski_helmet.htm will help you choose and fit the helmet properly.

www.bargainboards.co.uk (put your mouse over "ski helmets" and select your head size) have a very good range of helmets, I choose my one from there, and googled it and got it cheaper elsewhere.

There's a lot of websites out there that will be very helpful in your quest.

The reason that I bought a helmet: "One reason for this growth is that out of 84,200 winter sports injuries recorded last season, 17,500 were head related. It is believed that out of those 17,500, 7,700 injuries and 11 deaths could have been avoided if they had been wearing a helmet." I bought a Demon helmet with audio earpads.
