I don't know about Borovets or Pamps but have you thought about Bansko? There is quite a bit going on through the summer and the old town is very nice to have a walk around. Several of the hotels have outdoor pools.

re: Summer

never done summer in Pamps, but know they have mountain guides and mountain cycling, I personally think it would be a lovely place to go in the summer

Richard,
This is a post i did for fionaO not so long ago on a few things to do in and around borovets.Borovets is positioned well being only 1 hour from the airport.Accomodation and eating out is reduced in price once winter is over great bonus for summer visitors.Consider a hire car which would give you great flexability for day trips so you can get to places that are out of the way if public transport is not your thing.Perhaps splitting your holiday time between the two resorts is the way ...
Richard,
This is a post i did for fionaO not so long ago on a few things to do in and around borovets.Borovets is positioned well being only 1 hour from the airport.Accomodation and eating out is reduced in price once winter is over great bonus for summer visitors.Consider a hire car which would give you great flexability for day trips so you can get to places that are out of the way if public transport is not your thing.Perhaps splitting your holiday time between the two resorts is the way to go so you can get to know both areas.Well here are some ideas anyway.
If your keen you can walk to the rila monastery(A must the monastery is beautiful) or perhaps the seven lakes(awesome). There are shorter walks available for the not so keen. The kings residence is a short walk and open on certain days and hours .Take the gondola up to the top for a beautiful view and picnic.Bus down to Samokov it has a history museum, markets every day,big one on mondays ,mosque, synagogue, sarafina house, churches, fishing and more.Lake Iskar less than an hours drive for a picnic lunch and hire a non motorized boat very popular with the bulgarians from sofia for a day out with the family.Pretty country drives ,just a short trip to villages like beli iskar.Horse trekking in the mountains is a lovely way to spend part of your day( from Boro).Sofia has history to offer only 1 hours bus ride as does Plovdiv (the old part) 2hr bus ride.Swimming and barbecues to enjoy in the resort.
The rough guide and lonely planet have very useful info for the traveler.
Have a great break.
