Tanjette, you asked us to post about our hols...

Jusita nova Gordina! (Not sure how to spell it, but is that Happy New Year in Bulgarian?) Just got back from Bansko, we were there for New Year and had a brilliant time.

The drive from Sofia to Bansko was probably the scariest thing ever, they drive like mad, roads full of pot holes, all good fun though, even found McDonalds on the way! Stayed in apartments which were built earlier in 2005, about a 10 minute walk downhill from the Pirin hotel, where most of the restaurants were ...

Skiing/snowboarding conditions were a bit icy, it didn’t snow while we were there but looks like they’re getting plenty today, typical!!! It was extremely busy with the locals because of New Year, which meant quite a bit of queuing. It took us about 2 ½ hours from bottom of gondola station to get up the mountain (hiring equipment, getting lift passes etc), next time we’ll get the equipment & lift passes the day before we go on the slopes. For 2 days snowboard hire and lift pass from gondola station it cost 159 Lev (about £60). Watch out for run number 6, it is blue on the map but when you get on it the signs are red, I’m not that good yet but still enjoyed it & got down in 1 piece. Once it joins run 4 it’s fine and run 1 back to the gondola was good.

The restaurants were very busy (although a few days before we arrived they were apparently empty). The food was really good, mainly chicken/pork dishes and we got a pizza from the hotel next to the gondola (they also deliver). I think we spent about 20 Lev (roughly £7) per couple on a meal, including drinks. The people were lovely, especially in the restaurant we went to on New Year’s Eve, they made us feel very welcome and Bulgarian people definitely know how to party! We had a great time and I can’t wait to go back, missing the slopes already.

I found a really nice bottle of Bulgarian red wine and brought a bottle back, not sure if I’ll be able to get it in UK though, Melnik wine from Harsovo Question

Those who are about to go out there I'm sure you'll love it as much as we did.

I got in a taxi and put my seatbelt on and the driver told me to take it off again. When I asked him why the fare was double for the return trip compared to the trip there he told me it was because it was snowing. Very Happy

Not sure what the appartments were called Confused, they were at the top of a dead end road next to new building work, by a hotel which I think was called Chateau Vaptzarov. Apparently people call them the "English" appartments because so many English people have bought them. Don't know how true that is though. They had log fires, I remember the important details!) Very Happy
