That is not the Bansko I know!

Is the cost of a daily ski pass really BGN 49? That is a lot for a place like Bansko! And Has Bansko really turned into a building site, as suggested by that Bulgarian article? (See the photo in it): http://www.dnevnik.bg/show/?storyid=300708

re: That is not the Bansko I know!

You think £17.50 is expensive for a day pass at Bansko?. I think thats cheap.
Yes there is a lot of building work but that can't be avoided. All resorts have or had building works at some point.
I can say that Bansko is a great place to ski, the in resort accomodation is good the lifts are very modern and the slopes varied.

I beg to differ, ski passes are actually cheaper in Austria and you get a lot more ski mileage (and more snow) over there: http://www.spechtenseelift.at/liftpreise.htm.

As to building work, it is true it has happened everywhere at some point in time but the problem with Bansko is that it is just not stopping. And it is careless. Another problem is that the renewal of the basic public infrastructure (roads, water works, sewage collection and disposal, electricity generation and ...

Another problem is that the renewal of the basic public infrastructure (roads, water works, sewage collection and disposal, electricity generation and distribution) is not keeping pace with the construction of hotels. When there is no more snow in 10 years time, locals will find themselves saddled with destroyed environment whereas the Brits who now are singing great praises to Bansko will ruthlessly move on to another place. Very sad...

Have you been to that ski resort in Austria. From what I can read about it it is very small compared to Bansko.

re: That is not the Bansko I know!

I first skied in Austria in 1993 - still paying off the instalments.

Not a patch on Bulgaria - not in a million years.
Bulgaria knocks it dead for price, fun, people and nightlife.

Enjoy it Baz - I did, but at a price and I would never return having found Bulgaria. Snow or no snow.

re: That is not the Bansko I know!

I have skied in Austria for the last 8 years ( for free ) and also in Bulgaria for the last 4 years. Value for money Bulgaria wins hands down. You have got to remember Austria is a rich country, but Bulgaria is up and coming. I hope to ski in Bulgaria for years to come
