This will be the first year in six years that, unfortunately, I won't be visitng my beloved bansko for some sliding action and trust my luck, what happens...? the snow conditions are fantastic and I hear that the off-piste conditions are even better with around 2m of powder in places!!!! Bansko is one of those places that offers some brilliant off-piste skiing if you know where to look/go and where more often than not you can be the only one tracking out some fantastic freshies away from the maddening crowds. Just make sure that you hire a guide or experienced local if you are not proficient in snow pack assessment and avalanche awareness!
I know that Bansko is getting a lot of stick lately for being overcrowded in the ski resorts and on the slopes etc, but for the competent off-piste skier, there is a huge amount on offer on offer and not a queue or track in site. Now that is something that very few ski resorts can boast.
Happy sliding everyone and be safe on the slopes. Remember that conditioning your ski muscles before hitting the slopes will help prevent any broken bones, torn ligaments, sprains and strains that will only ruin your well earned holiday!
We are off for two weeks powder skiing in Niseko, Japan, this year but will be back in Bansko in 2009.
The snow forecast looks set to be good for the foreseeable future in Bulgaria si you can imagine that I am well jealous.
