What do people make of the rating system out there? I got hold of a couple of maps that can't agree on some runs being either blue red or black, it's not a problem but just wondering (if going by the piste map on the website) how people think the reds and blacks compare to reds and blacks that they've skiied at other resorts.

Second, I would rent skis and boots as soon as you can when you get to the resort and not before. I found that the skiis I was given at the rental just weren't up to the job and the boots only had two buckles and crippled my feet. I bumped into a guy from White Magic Ski School who sorted me out with some short carvers and Nordica boots. He's on the street form the resort heading towards the Samakov Hotel and the Gondola.
Anyway, hope everyone has a great time in Borovets!
About the boots: i've had te same experience so this year i've bought my own!
About the ski's: Last year it was our first time so we didn't know anything about the maintenance of the skies. But if you ask them everyday to wax the skies, they will.
If you are buying any kit, the best thing to do is to buy it when you get there! I would recomment buying and not renting any day - Especially in Bulgaria as the kit is so cheap. 'Hope you have a great time on 21st Dutch girl - see you there

Our skis were quite marked by the end of the week, and the shop had to perform repairs on a deep gash in one of them.
In terms of Reds and Blacks rating, I would say, very generally, that the Reds are generally Red/Blue and the Blacks are Black/Blue. For an intermediate skier there should be nothing especially challenging/frightening on piste, although there are some steep narrow bits in a couple of places - but not many.
