Vitosha in February

Hello All,

I am coming to Bulgaria with my son in February to ski at Vitosha. I have the flights booked! My step mum is Bulgarian and has an apartment where we can stay in Sofia. She is not into skiing so hasn't been able to give me much advice.

We don't have equipment so will need to hire skis, bindings and boots, plus purchase passes. I understand that there is a lift from the outskirts of Sofia up the mountain? Should I hire a car from the airport? Can I take a bus from Sofia ...

Can I take a bus from Sofia to Vitosha?

Can anybody give me any sensible advice as to the cost of hiring equipment and where from? I've been doing some research online and this website is the best resource I've found so far.

Many thanks.............Sam

just catch the bus from centre to Gondola or bur direct to ski centre.Avoid weekends.ski hire places all over the place at the bottom of gondola or even better from Aleko ski centre on top of gondola where you hire everything and at the end of each day go back with no hardware to sofia.taxi is Ok.Find a number for say one of the companies and from the gondola on the way down dial and the vehicle will wait for you .around 10-15 levs probably one way.Or hire a car and drive it all the way to ...
just catch the bus from centre to Gondola or bur direct to ski centre.Avoid weekends.ski hire places all over the place at the bottom of gondola or even better from Aleko ski centre on top of gondola where you hire everything and at the end of each day go back with no hardware to sofia.taxi is Ok.Find a number for say one of the companies and from the gondola on the way down dial and the vehicle will wait for you .around 10-15 levs probably one way.Or hire a car and drive it all the way to 1600m -Aleko ski centre.Parking a bit difficult there if you arrive late. That way you gain more time and freedom of choosing maybe going to Borovets for a change.Aleko is very limited skiing and very windy plus not much of a grooming going on up there. So get fit .One two places to eat there. All round cheaper to eat than Borovets and the rest.Be very carefull with the chair lifts-very dangerous, old and with missing bars so hold on tight. All in all -good place for a day or two skiing.
calculate this-
from Sofia downtown to Aleko (30 min drive and 40 min gondola before you ski.
Sofia to Borovets(50 min drive and then skiing or take gondola and then). Bigger skiing area .Hope this helps
