Hi folks,
A work mate of mine is a keen rambler and has tackled all the hills and munro's that Scotland has to offer.
He has been invited on a walking trip in Bulgaria this July which sees him fly into Sofia then across to a base in Bansko. A few days in the vicinity and then onto another area from which escapes me at the minute.
Have any of you been on a similar trip. . .any hints or tips for him?

I'd imagine it's roasting hot at base camp and cooling off the higher you go. . . am I correct? What weather can be expected? Is it a pleasurable experience or can the altitude and heat take the fun out of it.
All comments welcome as he is looking to book this weekend.
Never done an organised trip but it's very popular area for hiking, walking and rock climbing. Malyvitisa just down from Borovets is also very popular - is that the other place?
Summer's are usually around 30 degrees, although last summer it hit 40 degrees for a month. This is unusual, we had rain Altitude is good for breathing. I think it's around 1300 m that is considered the perfect altitude
There are loads of good walks from Bansko , some are 2 /3 days long and there are the Bulgarian equivalent to bunk houses along the way . A couple of the local companies in the town can organise the walks if your pal needs a hand . Last July the temps were HOT but this was exceptional . It will be cooler higher up but not too cold.
If your mate enjoys the Munroes then he will be fine over there .
Wullie, I know you said your friendwas going to Bansko but if in the future he was to consider staying in the Rhodope mountains in and around Pamporovo there are many beautiful villages and prices are a lot less than the resort centres where
As for activity and nature trips you could do off-road trips up into the mountains in off-road vehicles (Waz and Landrovers). The company concerned also arrange hiking, rock climbing, water sports, fishing etc etc. You name it and they will arrange ...
