Bulgarians who choose to spend the forthcoming holiday in mountain resorts should be on the alert. There is a serious risk of avalanches in the higher mountain areas, while freezing temperatures also pose a threat over holiday-makers.

Two Bulgarian tourists got lost in the Stara Planina slope because of the heavy snowfall. They were rescued and are now safe and sound. Mountain safety services recommended to the holiday-makers not to wander off in the mountains by themselves, and to beware of snow-slips.

re: Watch out!!! - Avalanches predicted

seems like it's been a fantastic season for snow in most places

I skied Kitzbuhel about 4 weeks ago with about 2m of snow + avalanche risks - there were 15 foot snow drifts in the town Exclamation

Just to high light the 'avalanche risk' Load of rubbish!!!!!!!!!!

We asked our instructor who has been there for over 20 years, he said that there has never been any avalanches, the resort isnt high/steep enough and you will see that for yourselves when you get there. So all of you now worrying please dont its just un necessary information. Just get yourselves off and enjoy, after all thats whats holidays are for!!!!!!

it depends how one interprets 'avalanches' I think.

The Borovets peaks are plenty high enough - higher than many Alpine resorts.

If there is a heavy deposit snow then there will eventually be some kind of snow displacement - maybe what the instructor means is the kind of *serious* avalanche that would take out a resort for instance?

If you have done a lot of skiing in heavy snow conditions you will know that it doesn't take much of a displacement to threaten a skier's life. Hence ...

If you have done a lot of skiing in heavy snow conditions you will know that it doesn't take much of a displacement to threaten a skier's life. Hence the warnings and occasional closure or the pistes.

Which resort were you in Will? I've not been to Bulgaria skiing before, but having looked at some of the resorts and pistes on this site it looks like there are some fairly gentle gradients - so maybe your instructor is correct for his resort.
