Week in Borovets

Thought I'd just post a quick report on a good week's skiing in Bulgaria.

A big group of us (30) descended on the Rila Hotel in Borovets.

Hotel : Nice but basic for a 4 star. I guess equivalent to a UK 2/3 star but it did have a hot tub/swimming pool you could use for free and included buffet Breakfasts and evening meals which actually served decent food.

All the rumours I had heard about the hotel turned out to be extremely exaggerated and in some cases plain nonsense ...

All the rumours I had heard about the hotel turned out to be extremely exaggerated and in some cases plain nonsense (thankfully)

Pistes : There were some very good runs but sadly just not enough snow to make it excellent.

Ski instructors : Seems a mixed bag but ours (a guy named Rosen) was superb.

Ski Rental Equipment : Acceptable but some people's kit was showing signs of serious wear/tear. I guess the same at any resort.

Lifts : Quite naff. There's one Gondola, a few chair lifts but all the rest drag lifts.

Apres Ski : Superb. Cheap booze/food/etc...

Snow Quality : Was excellent on the upper slopes but there are only a few runs on them. On the lower slopes there was too much ice and slushy snow.

Injuries : I managed to badly graze my knee and it's still pretty swollen now. On a steep drag lift going up to a red run I got about half way up but managed to come off through a sudden jerk in the drag and tried to nurse my way down but toppled over and just fell and fell for a good hundred metres I'd guess. Not nice!

Bulgarians : Some good, some bad. They certainly have a strange sense of humour though. At one point we lost a member of our group called "Dave" and a ski instructor said he's seen someone fall out of a Gondola and insisted it could have been "Dave" !

All in all a great holiday but I wouldn't go back due to the restricted runs, a feeling that snow won't get better any year soon and awkwardness to get around the pistes.

I started out the week having been skiing once before for 6 days in La Plagne. By the end of that holiday I was ok on blues. After this week I am starting to gain confidence and speed on very icy/slippery reds.

re: Week in Borovets

We have just returned too Nigel after a fantastic week! Snow could have been better but I think that's the same evrywhere and we did get some fab skiing in at the top of the gondola. I know what you mean about that jerky drag lift, I came a cropper half way up and ended up coming down the red, quite nervously but I did it! Wow!
The only thig that got on our nereves a little bit were the bar touts and the horse taxi touts constantly badgering you. I know they have had a tough season but ...

I know they have had a tough season but by the end of the week I was getting a bit sick of them! We found the golden horn which turned out to be our bar/eaterie fof the week. Anyway, enough waffle!
