I have skied Bansko for last 4 years and will be coming again in Feb next year.
Looking at trying a catered chalet with 2 other families all with kids. Does anyone have any recommendations (other than BG - sorry) to try, to guarentee good snow, but also get a good deal in a nice place.
Probably looking at France, but not exclusive. Tempted by Switz, Austria also.
You can't guarantee good snow anywhere, but the best you can do is go high. I can recommend the Trois Vallees, Tignes/Val d'Isere, Le Porte du Soleil, Le Paradiski, St Anton, Sella Ronda, Whistler, Vail. All fabulous places! You should be able to get a good price with a large group. Definitely best to do a DIY trip, rather than use a tour operator.
Have a look at Switzerland, its outside the Euor zone and there were some good deals this year. I found Austria not to expensive this year. But to guarantee real snow your probably looking for somewhere that is pretty high altitude.
Soll is fairly low, but has about 250 kms of piste and about 170 kms are cover by snow cannons. I think all the smart resorts are aware that the Xmas/New Year trade is extremely important and are making the investment.
Obergurgl, Austria at New year has a fantastic atmosphere, bit expensive, amazing snow and good accommodation, not so great for snowboarders as the pistes are rather over groomed for us, one of the most charming Alpine places I have Skied/snowboarded. V friendly, excellent lift system, no queues.
