Any one just returned - what's the conditions like - plenty of snow to last for years?
As I'm getting ready in the hotel I hope to be singing:
"Well the weather outside is white-full
And the slopes look very delightful
Cause I've got a full week to ski...
Let it snow, let it snow, let it ...err.. snee?"
How good are the runs, Can you board all the way down the the ski road , What were the busiest/best bars, Has Bansko got the seedy side that Borovets has, whats the Best steakhouse??????
There was a lot of snow last week making the ski road heavy at the bottom. I am a skier and had to do a lot of poling at the bottom. Not good for boarders I suspect. Will depend on the conditions. Try it once and see how it is. The middle bit will be fine. The main runs up the mountain are in excellent condition.
The best bars are Happy End opposite the gondola for when you come off the slopes. In the town the Lion Bar, Amigos and Sir Gallahad plus nightclubs Amnesia and the Playboy ...

There is a vast selection of restaurants. The golden fox and the Steak House offer more western food then there are the traditional mehanas. The one opposite the Strazhite is excellent offering tradional and western food. Had a lovely steak there with blue cheese sauce.
Didn't see any seedy bits to Bansko and I was out late or early morning whichever you prefer.
Bansko's great!!! Been going there since 2000 (when they had no lifts and you drive 16 km up to the bottom of the lift on sheet ice - really quite scary - but fun). Re. food - I would personally recommend you go to the mehanas - they are really cheap and the food is great. The only problem is that you cannot see them very well from the road. They sort of hide behind large wooden gates but you can ask - the best road for them is the one down towards the old town area. You will be able to ...

You will be able to get menu's in English in most of them and if you are lucky there will be live music (gypsy bands). Get yourself a shopska salad and a rakia (grape brandy I think) for starters then get a load of mezze type food and you cannot go wrong - I love the mixed grills. The wines are great also. Tip - go for local drinks.
If you want to arrange ski instruction, you can arrange it at any of the ski hire places. I would recommend doing half a day for the first couple of days - it'll set you back about £30 in total and it's so much better than group stuff.
In my opinion Bansko (although not as large) is better than Borovets and Pamporovo and is great value.
We were in Pamps last year and have decided this year not to partake in a full week of tuition - I guess you could say we are now at the intermediate stage...However, we are planning to get a half day private tuition - any idea how much for 2? Also is the gondola seriously busy? - we are aiming to start heading out about 10.30 on a morning to try and avoid the rush?
What are the best runs to 'break the week in' - ie nice and gentle - nothing too taxing
hi there,
If I were you, I'd have a lei in and go for your ski's after lunch, unless you have your own. The queue for the ski hire was the only negative in Bansko!
From the top gondola station. Take the 4 man on the left. Turn right at the top, and you will have a nice gentle warm up. At the resturants left for the gondola or second lift on the right (lower one) will take you to blue 10. Take Simon's advice he's spot on. Have a great time
