Why does the forcast snow always go down??

Why does it seem that the amount of snow forecast always get smaller as the time that it's due gets nearer?

Is this a technical meterologicalalisming.... or just optomistic forecasting from people who love an anticlimax?

.... or just me getting over excited and the fact that my iphone now allows me to look at forecasts every minute of every day (just as I was getting over my addiction)

The bottom line is ..... no one can forecast the white stuff with any amount of long term accuracy. Most can offer generalisations such as 'getting colder' etc.....but actually nailing the snowfall has proved beyond even the most expensive & sophisticated forecasting systems.

Having said that...reading the various forecasts is a lot of fun and has the ability to get a lot of folk excited (me included!) and is a massive part of the build up!

Tortoise bob - have same affliction with snow sites and i phone. My wife calls it ski porn. Simply look at all the sites , pick the best, get bitterly disappointed, promise never to look at sites again, and repeat. going to auffach in two weeks and was so excited at forecast of 44 cm let pupils go early for lunch. One hour later downgraded to 2 cm - brought them bacl in early!!!!

I'm glad I'm not alone in my affliction. Maybe we could start a support group...... I'm torn between:
