Wrist protectors

I'm a first time snowboarder coming to borovets this xmas. can anyone tell me if wrist protectors are advisable or do you just end up ditching them after the first day cause they're restrictive?

cheers........

re: Wrist protectors

Buy some. Buy some. Really, buy some. The Salomon ones are about 12 or 15 quid, and theyre pretty good.
One of the first things they'll teach you (if youre having lessons) is how to do heelside sideslipping. This involves a *LOT* of falling on your bum while you get your balance, and invariably you will end up trying to cushion your fall with the palms of your hands. This sends some fairly large shocks through the wrist end of your forearm bones (radius and ulna IIRC), and you can shatter ...

This sends some fairly large shocks through the wrist end of your forearm bones (radius and ulna IIRC), and you can shatter them in extreme circumstances!!! Or more likely it'll just flippin' hurt, and you'll get frightened of falling, cos you know its going to hurt, and the loss in confidence can make you fall over even more!

The wrist guards protect your bones from this shock, and make the first day or 2 SOOOOO much more bearable. I did stop wearing mine after the first 2 days, but for those 2 days they are a godsend!

Only thing is to make sure that either your gloves fill comfortably over the top of the guards, or that the guards fit over the top of your gloves: mine werent quite the right size.

HTH,

Ed.

Hi...

I learnt to snowboard earlier this year and within 20 minutes of being on the slope I had fractured my wrist Sad

I have since bought some Dakine wrist guards which have, if nothing else made me feel more confident about not fracturing my wrist again. I did find them restrictive when using drag lifts and anything else that you have to hold on to but the confidence boost far out weighed the restriction. I have since bought some Dakine wrist guards which have, if nothing else made me feel more confident about not fracturing my wrist again. I did find them restrictive when using drag lifts and anything else that you have to hold on to but the confidence boost far out weighed the restriction. I can now in some way shape or form snowboard and have since ditched them due to the restriction but I would recomend them anyday if your at all worried. Some of my instructors have said they are a good idea and some have said that they simply transfer the shock up your arm and may cause you to break your arm and not you wrist but I guess they wouldn't sell them if they wern't of some use!!

As Ed said above... make sure that your gloves fit over them!!!!!

Have a good one Very Happy

re: Wrist protectors

GET SOME. £15 in any skate / surf / ski shop. Buy them then buy your gloves.

During our first lesson in Pamps in March this year a girl fractured her wrist this very way. She didnt have guards on.

The only good thing is she got a free mountainside ski-doo rescue...

re: Wrist protectors

Reds do some good wrist supports as well, I wear mine all the time, stops me breaking my wrist AGAIN! I still wear them all the time boarding as I tend to put a hand down if I land a bit rough over the jumps! Confused

As everyone else has said, make sure your gloves fit over the top of them, dont buy solid plastic ones as they just transfer the load higher up your arm and the break can be more serious, have seen a compound fracture on a mate who bought cheap roller blade wrist guards, caught ...

That said, they should teach you how to fall nicely without putting your hands out, use your whole forearm with fists, spreads the load a bit better (hopefully)

Enjoy the ride Smile
