Iv been hearing rumours that you need to carry your passport on you at all times in Pamps, is this true? not really too keen on this, will they not accept an EU driving licence as a valid form of ID, just i dont particularly want to carry my passport around with me.
Its Bulgarian law that you have to be able to identify yourself to a policeman. A driving license would probably be OK. I've been here 5 years and never been asked, so I wouldn't be too worried. Tourism is the life blood of the region so there is no way cops go around hassling people for ID (unless they smash people in the head with paving slabs, of course). Relax and leave the passport in the hotel.
You don't need to carry any ID Ben. We left our passports in the hotel safe all week - best place for them! We managed to change money and hire Skidoos without having to produce any ID or driving licences. Only thing you need is your lit pass, which you will get on your first morning at the ski depot. This doesn't need a photo either, but you have to leave a smal deposit (think it was about 5 lev last year) which you get back at the end of the week when you hand your pass back
Oh! How interesting. My passport has always been taken from me at check in and returned to me at check out. I have no idea what happens to it in between these times and have never needed it! Oddness.
When travelling anywhere you should always take at least one photocopy of your passport ID page, as a back up if you should lose your passport or if is it stolen.
So just carry the photocopy - much safer, folds down to virtually nothing and still serves its purpose if needed.
You do need ID if you hire skis from an independent hirer, as I found when trying to rent skis for my snowboarding son one morning. (First place on the left as you went down from the bus drop off in Pamporovo #2)
They do ask for your passport when you check in at the hotel but if you ask they will return it the following morning. We've always done this wherever we've travelled because I'm paranoid about ID fraud and prefer to keep it myself.
dito lizzi hate leaving my passport with anyone, plus your not suppose to for that very reason but not going to argue on arrival just get it back as soon as you can.
hotels usually organised visas and keeping your passport was part of it but now they are part of the E.U. I presume they won't be doing it anymore.
