advice please for experienced skiers

Hi all,
We (parents with 2 kids, 12 and 10) were thinking of going skying in Bulgaria this year, around New Year. We live in Greece and thought of driving there. Which would be the best resort, skywise ? (we're all experienced skiers, skying in France and Switzerland)
thanks a lot ! Very Happy

Hi djudju,
I would advise you to go to Bansko - It's the nearest to Greece and offers more slopes for experienced ones /as well as Borovets but you will have and extra 1.5 h drive to there/. Be prepared that the skiing conditions /especially for experiensed skier/ won't be the same as in the Alps. Smile

Thanks Philip,
I gather you've been there. Was it by any chance in the Xmas holiday season?. I read some posts about dreadful queues and stuff ... and would you have any suggestions for hotels or even better apartments ?
thanks again!

Hi djudhu
Although of course I'm somewhat biased, do at least consider Borovets. Take a look at www.theracebulgaria.com for some good photos and descriptions of the slopes and facilities. Email me if you need any help with apartments or hotels there - but do let me know the sort of quality you might be looking for.
Have a great time in BG

Hi Steve,
How so, biased ? The problem with Borovets is the distance - driving with 2 kids from Athens is already a nightmare, don't want to make it unnecesseraly long!
Our idea is to find a nice apartment with a kitchen, to do some home cooking, or else a cosy hotel with a fireplace, that sort of stuff, but I still have to check the web, so I'll come back later with inquiries....
thanks!

re: advice please for experienced skiers

Hi djudju
I'm biased because I live in Borovets with my family. Worse, I have never been to Bansko so cannot advise you honestly and impartially. Both Borovets and Bansko receive both good and bad reviews, because obviously what suits one person doesnt always suit another. Good luck!

re: advice please for experienced skiers

Hi djudju,

Yes - i've been there. In fact I live in Sofia, and in winter I go skiing in Vitosha, Borovets or Bansko.
You may find these two sites veru useful on Bansko.

http://banskoblog.com/

And - yes, it usually is quite crowded around New Year and X-mas.
