Yesterday, on my last day in Bulgaria, before taking the afternoon plane to Heathrow, I went on a walk to Vitosha. I took the old two-seater lift from Dragalevtzi, a village at the foot of the mountain (sure none of you have been on that lift). It was cloudy and some snowflakes were starting to fall. Next to me sat a 50-year old man from Dragalevtzi. I know this, because he told me how he celebrated his birthday the night before.

As we went up, the wind got stronger, the snow got heavier, and we found ourselves in a real snowstorm. I remarked that it is not just the sunny days that are beautiful in the mountain, but also a storm like this makes for a great experience and it is more challenging. The man fully agreed, he seemed to be enjoying that weather. Then his face got rather unhappy and he said: "WE HAD NO WINTER THIS YEAR". I looked at him trying to understand what he really meant. He left no doubt: "hardly any snow, just these last couple of weeks". I did not want to tell him that according to www.bulgariaski.com we are having the best snow in 20 years. After all he had lived at the foot of the mountain for 50 years and should know better. So I nodded and said that I had also seen much deeper snow in previous years. The man started a story about how much snow there had been when he was a child and then we reached the station and our roads parted.
Lets hope we have a proper winter next year!!
Yes,George, usually winters in Bulgaria start in November with loads of snow to last till end of March.Almost like in Siberia, but with mild temperatures.
