Hi Matt

Been to Plovdiv with Balkan, and going back again this year. Flight was on time in both directions, and the transfer time was about an 1.5 hours. Plovdiv airport is ex military and is very basic. Wouldn't want to have to spend too long there as no facilities really, except a coffee bar/kiosk.

Balkan, like lots of airlines of former Eastern Bloc countries, operate Tupolev airliners. They are perfectly safe but not fitted with all the latest entertainment gear. Quite comfy, in fact I had a more comofrtable flight on them than I have had with Airtours and the like. Be warned tho, their luggage lockers are very small and so you shouldn't take loads of hand luggage!

About ski packs and stuff - I checked every brochure and tour operator this year that went to Pamps and from that I would say that you'd find their prices dirt cheap - not sure how they do it. Yeah - learn to ski means you only ever learn to snow plough lol.

hi, my friends do not need lessons and they always book the beginner pack so they get their gear and lift pass, no one ever asks anything, you just get your gear and head off on your own...

I fly from EM with Balkan every time and its great, always on time, (touch wood though going next week with them from EM)... the food on the plane is Bulgarian - just ham and cheese with a bit of bread and salad - its actually quite nice and healthy.

the only problem with Balkan is that sometimes they take a long time to check in at EM so advise you try to get there a good two hours early unless you want to be stood in a queue for over an hour - its not always the case.
