Well it can't hurt. If you're worried about too much wax being on it, then don't be. As long as the person waxing scrapes off the excess wax afterwards.
Most manufacturers apply some form of waxing to the boards before they leave the factory - but not all do. Scrape your thumb nail across the base and see if any wax comes off. If not, it's either not waxed, or it has been scraped very well!

I just took small block of wax and used my travel iron. Did my skiboards once while out there and used my notwax couple of times a day. Sorted! Can iron your clothes as well.
