Well, finally got home to Harrow on Saturday afternoon. Having got coach from Hotel at 4 am, we ended up sitting on the plane for 3 hours til fog cleared. Hoorah. But all in all a great holiday.
I was only one in group of 8 who had been to Bulgaria before, so knew more what to expect. Hotel Royal was adequate. Certainly not at same level as Rila/Samokov, despite also being a 4*. Only 25 rooms on 2 floors. We had 3 rooms on ground floor which were huge, with excellent bathroom. ...
Hey all,
Well, finally got home to Harrow on Saturday afternoon.
The room on floor 1 was probably half size, yet same price. I thought food was typically adequate, certainly not uneatable, but the others werent very impressed. Also wasnt impressed by brochures advertising swimming pool and night club, only to find an outdoor frozen pool and a permanently closed club.
Couple of miles from resort, but regular shuttle minibus so not really a problem.
First morning was typical chaos. We got skis very quickly but then stood outside Samokov for over 2.5 hours waiting to be put into groups. I and one other got fed up with lessons after first day, but rest were beginners with Christo - by all accounts an excellent teacher.
Bit bare on first day, but big snowfall set us up nicely for week. Think I managed to go on every single run in resort, on both skis and my bigfoot blades! The Valley trail fromtop of gondola all way to bottom is excellent and well worth trying. Even those with just a few days lessons could prob do it, albeit slowly. Narrow winding passage with jumps and bumps. Takes a good 45 mins.
In contrast, winding green run from top of far left 4-man was not very good. Popular with beginner classes, I guess it is a good green run, but far too many places where run was actually up hill.
Evenings usually ended up in buzz bar (2 for1 before midnight). Quiz was a laugh (we won out of 12 teams) but expect to be up against bonus points being handed out for buying reps drinks and drunken singing :-(
Had heard good things about petes bar, but went there only to find it invaded by 14 year old girls doing karaoke.
Think thats about it for now. Looks like I got away lucky. Just got back to work to find my colleague broke both his legs on first day in andorra, and is laid up in a hospital where no one speaks english :-(
