Just heard on my local radio station that Plovdiv is going to be capital of culture in 2019 never been there myself but must be a top place to get this reward.
Depends which part of it you visit really. There are some lovely parks and decent
shopping areas, but like most Cities there are some pretty dark places that you wouldn't
want to be wandering around. I would imagine that by 2019 it will be a really nice City
and well worth visiting. Airport is especially nice now and a million miles from the old
military one we had to use years ago.
It will be a great surprise, but Plovdiv is rated 6.th place Lonely Planet 2015 for City trips.
The town is much more interessting as Sofia and the pictures old town with Museums and churches is really nice. Great to see the Old Roman theathre and enjoy the carfree shopping area.

P.S. It is anytime a great short Trip to Plovdiv az the Vinaria is hold and a great chance to try the latest wines.
I've stopped in Plovdiv both in Winter and Summer ands its lovely, stopping at the old plovdiv hostel in the old town for €13 3 berth private room b&B. more like a 3 star hotel / museum.
In summer the place is buzzing with museums, art galleries, music venues, open air gigs, bars around the square etc.
This will be great for Plovdiv as it has a great cultural offer, this will shine a very bright light on the City, the airport should do well out of it too which can't harm Pamporovo

Plovdiv is a fantastic city to visit. It has a history going back 6000 years and is one of the oldest cities in Europe.
We think it is much more interesting than Sofia.
It makes a great day out and it is less than a two hour drive from Borovets.
When you approach the city you may be forgiven for feeling a bit disappointed, like many Bulgarian cities the outskirts are filled with tower housing blocks built in the communist times, but get into the old city and you will not believe what you ...

When you approach the city you may be forgiven for feeling a bit disappointed, like many Bulgarian cities the outskirts are filled with tower housing blocks built in the communist times, but get into the old city and you will not believe what you can see. How about a Roman amphitheatre seating 6000 people built in 200 AD and still in near perfect condition?
You can get a guide from Tourist Information, it is not expensive, 10 Leva per person, they are very knowledgeable and it is well worth the expense. We know people that have been to Plovdiv and some how managed not find the old city.
.
I had sometimes problems to find both parts, after walking up the first hills with the clocktower and these wounderful gardens. Need some Moments to find the tunnel under the main road.
And you can manage it from Borovets by bus from the Station near Post station in lower Borovets and it cost round about 6 lev oneway.
For the return home, you could use the train to Kostenetz and the bus from there to Samokov via Borovets
