cupcake beanie?

Okay, so my husband and I just got back from a trip to NYC and on every block there was some fancy cupcake shop. We tried one of these delicacies but I'm stumped - who spends $4.50 for a single cupcake? What is this infatuation with cupcakes? To top it off, I was shopping for a new snowboard beanie and came across all of these cupcake beanies: http://www.snowboardpricing.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?st=cupcake&x=0&y=0?e=41. Who in their right mind would wear those things on their head???
