for the zillion time: the E111 is replaced by eurocross-card for EU members. UK has another insurance.

if you read my pst properly you would see i sed about the health card thing and posted a link to a previous post, my question was am i entitled to health card, not what is the card called!!!
Col, the EHIC card (replaced the E111) only covers very basic medical attention and can never replace a full travel insurance policy. Search and rescue, for example, in the alps can cost as much as £20,000 if a helicopter is used - honest!!
Firstly some insurance policies will not pay out unless u have it. Not all but some. However unless u read the small print before buying a policy then u wont know. Most people are buying insurance policies these days from the internet or from high street stores like boots & Tesco as it is cheaper, but be careful. My advise is always read the small print before buying.

Secondly, Except for the most expensive polices most have lower & upper claim limits. Therefore it is advantageous to have the EHIC to take care of the lesss expensive treatment if needed.
Just because u are travelling on a British passpost does not mean u will get free treatment, u must have applied for the EHIC card prior to going abroad.
