bulgaria is ok compared to some of the other resorts

The slopes across Europe have not seen fresh snow in over a week and the spring like climate continues to soften the snow and prompt freeze thaw. The glacial resorts report colder temperatures on their higher slopes and therefore have better preserved snow at altitude. Pistes have become worn and icy in places; however, strong sunshine softens exposed, south facing areas by midday.

Oppdal was the only Norwegian resort to receive fresh snow over the weekend and saw 35cm settle on their slopes creating powder conditions for this week’s visitors.

Some Scottish resorts had a dusting of snow over the weekend leaving a granular layer over hard pack. The Lecht did not see any fresh snow but are maintaining their slopes with artificial snow.

The Californian resorts in America haven’t seen any fresh snow in over ten days and the slopes are skier packed. Bumper snowfall forecast later this week will improve the skiing and boarding on offer.

Canada is seeing milder temperatures after the snowfalls last week and this has prompted rain in the Eastern Canadian resorts that we report on early this week.

Austria
Fresh snow is needed at most resorts to cover over the spring like snow of last week; however, the forecast is for yet more sunshine this week with temperatures on Monday indicating no change in the milder climate Austrian slopes are experiencing.

Temperatures at mid mountain level hover around freezing with resorts reporting icy and hard snow in the mornings with softer slopes in the afternoon.

The glacial resorts Pitztal (45/195cm), Kaunertal (40/210cm), Kaprun (122/192cm), Kuhtai (110/210cm) and Hintertux (20/210cm) boast lower temperatures on upper slopes which is keeping the snow is good shape in the sunny weather.

The snow at the Arlberg resorts, Lech (140/190cm), Zurs (140/190cm) and St Anton (60/252cm) has faired well with temperatures consistently below freezing providing resistance to thaw in the persistent sunshine.

The forecast is fore more sunshine this week with part cloudy weather expected across the Austrian mountains on Wednesday and Thursday.

France
Temperatures in the French mountains have been warm and there have been reports of reducing snow packs at many resorts due to thaw. Spring like snow conditions are the standard across most resorts with temperatures hovering just above freezing and the sun still prevalent in the sky.

Most resorts still maintain good snow coverage down to resort level despite the thaw. The best snow conditions remain at altitude where the colder temperatures help to preserve the snow quality.

The forecast is varied for the week ahead with some light mid week snowfalls expected at Cauterets (15/75cm), Isola 2000 (102/155cm), La Rosiere (100/160cm) and Bareges/La Mongie (40/50cm). The rest of the French resorts will see cloudier weather from Wednesday and this is expected to clear by the weekend.

Switzerland
Similar to France, the Swiss resorts are reporting reduced snow levels due to the sunny and mild weather creating minor thaw. However, the temperatures early this week are mostly below freezing and good skiing on spring like snow can be found on most Swiss slopes.

The slopes at Zermatt (20/200cm) are still in good condition according to the Ski Club rep as the temperatures have been below freezing, particularly on the upper slopes and closer to the glacier.

Light mid week snowfalls are forecast at Zinal (50/120cm), Zermatt (20/200cm), Verbier (25/111cm), Saas-Fee (66/172cm), Haute Nendaz (20/100cm), Grimentz (80/140cm), Grachen (25/75cm) and Crand Montana (32/205cm). All other Swiss resorts are forecast cloudy skies from Wednesday and this is expected to clear by the weekend.

Italy
Even though the last snowfalls in Italy were more than ten days ago, temperatures remain cooler than most other European resorts keeping the snow in good condition despite the spring like weather.

However, because of the colder temperatures some resorts are reporting hard and icy pistes and fresh snow is needed to cover the worn and icy areas. The benefit of the cooler climate is that snow making efforts are covering the slopes where possible with fresh snow to groom.

Cervinia (50/200cm), Canazei (80cm), Arabba (70/190cm), Gressoney-la-Trinite (70/150cm), Macugnaga (130cm), Pila (120cm) and Selva Gardena (50/125cm) are all expecting at least a light dusting of some new snow mid week. Other Italian resorts are forecast cloudier weather from Wednesday and this is due to clear by the weekend.

Andorra
It’s a cloudy start to the week in Andorra with some pockets of blue sky appearing intermittently. Temperatures are below freezing and a light dusting of new snow is forecast to fall in the next couple of days which will improve the hard packed conditions.

The best conditions remain on the upper slopes of Arcalis (50/120cm) where the groomed pistes are riding well. All Andorran resorts are reporting packed and hard piste conditions.

Norway/Sweden
A mixed bag of weather across Norway at the start of this week. Geilo (90/130cm), Hemsedal (115/165cm) and Lillehammer (130/130cm) are reporting sun and cloud, whereas further north in Oppdal (90/110cm) they have had 35cm of fresh powder on Sunday, with further snowfalls today. This means fantastic powder conditions for early this week in Oppdal.

Voss (100/200cm) also received 5cm of new snow on Sunday, although unfortunately this fell as rain at lower levels and the lower slopes and some off piste is now wet and heavy.

The forecast for the rest of the week throughout Norway is very promising, with snow forecast at all resorts from Tuesday onwards. Oppdal is looking forward to 21cm this week, and Voss should improve with 31cm falling from Thursday into the weekend.

Germany
Sunny weather continues across Germany this week and it is another glorious day on Monday. Temperatures remain below freezing and this is helping to hold the snow well. There is a chance of some new snow falling towards the end of the week; however, this could fall as rain at lower levels.

Pistes are hard packed and providing some fast skiing and boarding, the pick of the bunch are the upper slopes of Garmisch (15/200cm) and Oberstdorf (20/190cm).

The general snow cover is still very good and there’s some great riding to be had on well groomed slopes.

Bulgaria
The new snow that fell last week has left Bulgarian resorts in great shape. The upper, groomed slopes are skiing very well and there’s very good snow cover across all resorts.

The weather is changeable this week, with the possibility of some more snow showers towards the end of the week. Temperatures remain low which is holding the snow well. Bansko’s (100/180cm) upper slopes are fast and packed – great for carving.

Scotland
Light dustings falling at Cairngorm (40/50cm), Nevis Range (30/65cm) and Glenshee (55/70cm) are softening conditions slightly; however, the bases are still very hard and icy so take care. Nevis Range is reporting the best conditions on the Summit runs.

The snow is very patchy at The Lecht (20/30) with extremely limited off piste. The runs are being maintained by artificial snow.

The forecast suggest more snow fall by the weekend; however, for the early stages of the week temperatures are milder and there is a chance of rain.

USA
The powder conditions of last week have been well skied in most states; however, the ski resorts in Colorado have received fresh snow over the weekend. Steamboat (183cm) in Colorado and Jackson Hole (224/259cm) in Wyoming both had 15cm of fresh snow over the weekend topping up powder levels on the trails for the week ahead.

After last week’s snowfalls the resorts in Vermont have excellent snow conditions and great snow coverage. Temperatures have risen well above freezing early this week and rain is forecast before snowfalls from mid week.

Snow on the trails at resorts in Utah has been well preserved by cold temperatures and sunnier skies are forecast this week for better visibility and great weather to enjoy the skiing and boarding on offer.

The resorts that we report on in California haven’t received any fresh snow in over ten days and the slopes are mostly skier packed. There is good news as bumper snowfalls are forecast for later this week with 40cm expected to settle on their slopes by the weekend.

All resorts across America are expecting snow in between sunny weather. California, though, is expecting heavy snowfalls with over 40cm forecast to settle by the weekend. Temperatures in Vermont has risen above freezing bringing rain on Monday, thereafter light snowfalls are forecast and sunny weather is expected to prevail from the weekend.

Canada
Milder temperatures have followed the snowfall’s of last week and resorts in eastern Canada are seeing rain fall at lower levels early this week.

Resorts in British Colombia have seen light snowfalls over the weekend. After receiving fresh snow nearly every day last week Fernie (340cm) saw a light dusting refresh their powdery slopes over the weekend and conditions are excellent with plenty of snow to be found off the trails.

A mixture of sunshine, cloudy skies and light to moderate snowfalls are forecast across the Canadian mountains this week. Whistler (244cm) is expecting 27cm of snow by the weekend.

European Weather Outlook
The weather is forecast to remain sunny this week in Austria with some cloudy weather expected on Wednesday and Thursday. Some French, Swiss and Italian resorts are expecting some light mid week snow with the rest of the resorts forecasting cloudier weather from Wednesday and clear skies again by the weekend.

It is forecast to be a snowy week for resorts in Sweden, Norway and at Sierra Nevada in Spain with moderate snowfalls expected. Scotland are forecast a mixture of rain and light snowfalls. Light dustings are expected mid week in Andorra with sunny weather for Question
