I have read a few comments about being ripped off by the booths but i went last year and got a very good rate far better than the hotels and banks etc and never got ripped off,
The booth outside the Rila was one of the best and if you ask what the exchange rate is and if there is any commishion charge you will know before you part with your money what you are going to get.
I'm not saying that there are not people out there to rip you off as i am sure their are but as i said i never got ...

Robo you are the only one so far to say they did not get ripped off from an exchange booth! even if you did get a better rate you are still paying a commision which you do not at your hotel. As for poor rate what rate where you given? Exchange rate is normally around 2.8 to the £1 even if they where giving you 3lev the difference is pennies and not worth the risk.
There are 2 types of exchange booths in Bulgaria.
The ones marked Crown are fine, as they are owned and run by the government and these are genuine and honest.
It's the other independant ones that look very much the same that are the problem.
Risk it if you want, and ignore the advice of people who are far more qualified to advise you tell you.
DO NOT USE ANY EXCHANGE BOOTHS OTHER THAN CROWN!!!
I went to Borovets last year. Our rep recommended change plus. They gave us an excellent rate - much better than the hotels and far far better than we got from our travel agent before we went.
Change plus is the place to go but wherever you change your cash I recommend you work out how many lev's you expect to get for your money.
