Hi, I'm new to the whole snowboard thing and am going to Borovets on 20th Dec for a week snowboarding. Do I need a helmet or will a beanie to the job? I seem to be getting conflicting advice!
I haven't been to Bulgaria for 2 years but last Jan went to Banff in Canada and I would say most people are wearing them.
A friend of ours had a kid who slipped on ice getting off the gondola, fell backwards straight onto his head. It was a total accident but it may have been touch and go, according to Dr, that he may have suffered serious head trauma if he had not been wearing his helmet.
A hat will probably do you. If your only starting out chances are you wont fall over at any sort of speed and its more likely it will be you arse you will be bruising not your head. Buy a helmet when you start riding parks , kickers rails etc if thats the way you will wanna go
I bit the bullet and bought a helmet,
out in Bansko 1 year ago no helmet literally at a stop, crossed skis hit the side of my head had a thick ear for couple of days.
Go for a helmet as it's a hazardous sport insurance might not look so sympathic at you claim if you get injured.
There are always two views on wearing helmets: those people who don't like them because they think it doesn't look cool and then those who choose to wear them because they understand that most ski/snowboard accidents are caused by other skiers/boarders crashing into them with heads colliding than their own ski ability causing injury.
Personally, I choose to wear a helmet for the latter reason. Besides, helmets have come a long way and some of them actually don't look or feel too bad - ...
