Libyan police arrested the Bulgarians in February 1999. They were in prison until September 2002, when a high tribunal in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, acquitted them of conspiracy charges and handed the case over to an ordinary criminal court. They were then placed under house arrest in Tripoli until being detained again when their trial recommenced in the eastern city of Benghazi in September.
An experts' poor hygiene at the Benghazi hospital likely led to the contamination, and estimated it happened in 1997 - more than a year before
the Bulgarians were hired to work there. But a commission of court-appointed Libyan doctors rejected the Western expert's testimony and said the Bulgarians wilfully infected the children with the virus through blood transfusions.
The medics were tortured and treated like animals in the first years in the prison. During first months of their arrest they were not allowed of layers. After the 5-year trial they were sentences to death.
We all know they are innocent and appeal you to help inform as many people in Europe and around the world as possible. Please, help with whatever you can to free them.
If you only inform a friend of yours about the case, all Bulgarians will be very thankful to you.

Maria,I don't know if you know that we are aware of this. It has been talked about here on T.V. and radio.It certainly does not seem to have been a standard of investigation or trial that we would recognise as justice.
Let's hope that there are enough people spreading the facts to make a difference.

If they are innocent then obviousley this is a very bad thing. But if we look at it from Libyas perspective they have been blamed for many crimes that they did not commit such as the Lockerbie Bombing and shooting of Evonne Fletcher. Western governments have tried to assassinate Gaddaffi too so it is not surprising that libyans dont treat foreign prisoners well.

Pamporovo Pete I can see that World affairs is not your strong point. Let me guess you read the Sun. Stick to skiing. It is common knowledge that the Iranians blew up the plane over Lockerbie in revenge for the Americans shooting down an iranian plane some months earlier. Libya only heavy heartedly admited guilt to end the sanctions regime that was crippeling their country.re: help Bulgarians

Well said Pete.Hellooooooo, did'nt Libia release 2 people that went on trial in Holland. I think you'll find that they did.
Hold on a minute Maria, there's some people here who don't think that Libya could do such a thing. I know what we should do lets ignore them, with any luck they'll put their heads back in the sand so no one will have to listen to their pathetic drivel.
