Just walked in door from Borovets (Balkan holiday).
We've been going since 1988 and the journey out was the best yet - not a single hitch. Had clear blue skies and sunshine all week, in comparison to rest of Bulgaria, where fog seemed to have affected every airport. Found prices very similar to last year despite global price increases in oil/fuel and food. Bulgarians have seen their food costs rise by 40% and tax rises by 10%. Found prices very similar to last year despite global price increases in oil/fuel and food. Bulgarians have seen their food costs rise by 40% and tax rises by 10%. Spare a thought for the instructors who earn 50 lev a week (£20), so any tips at the end of the week are very welcome!!
Exchange rate in resort started at 2.65 lev to £1 -dropped to 2.5 by end of week (easier to convert!)
Prices in Samokov Town up to half of resort prices so consider paying 15 - 20 lev for taxi and ask for Old House restaurant - fabulous food. Very popular so suggest ask instructor to book for you.
Return journey was difficult due to fog. Ended up 10 hours delay out of Sophia to Gatwick but better than those stuck at airport for 3 days!! Varna now open so planes are being routed there to wait a break in fog at Sophia. Balkan reps at Sophia worked very hard and pushed us to front of queue for scheduled flight, thought World War 3 was about to kick off between Bulgarian passengers and airport staff and security.
Snow is due now and this should clear the fog. Fantastic skiing conditions in Borovets- best we've had for years. All runs open and great to ski, very little ice. Needed sun block even in January and sun glasses rather than goggles. Russian Xmas holidays now finished so quieter in resort, apart from some English rowdies (unfortunately).
Felt more for the stranded travellers. Television crew reporting from Sophia as it was that bad.
Not as bad as when we got caught up in the fall of the communist regime - tanks everywhere, no planes or pilots - all off patrolling or fighting! Had to be rescued by Dannair - first western plane ever to fly into Bulgaria (officially anyway!)

It doesn't matter how interesting the journeys have been over the years, once we are there we LOVE the place and people. Have been to Italy and Austria and had problems with flights and transfers - it's the risk of flying to cold snowy places I think.
Can you get video clips of you and your thong on a site somewhere? Often wondered what you look like and would love to see you at your best!!
