hi everyone!
we're planning a holiday to borovets in feb- it's just me and my boyfriend- we're beginner boarders and are planning on booking a snowboarding package. we were just wondering which hotel to choose- rila or samokov? can anyone share their experiences? whats the food like? is it worth upgrading to the al a carte and how do we do that? im a really fussy eater but im not expecting much (have read the food info!) also could you let us know what sort of stuff we need to bring ...

Rila is right by the bottom of the nursery area and the chair lifts, Samokov is nearer to the gondola lift. Gear will probably be hired from the area nearer the chair lifts.
Both are very big hotels, but the Samokov is probably a bit nicer if not as central. It's not necessarily worth upgrading to a la carte as you are then still restricted to the hotel - better to stick with half board and then if you don't want the evening meal, you can still go out.

If you're fussy you could always try one of the hotels that only does B&B or a Rila apartment/studio and then you can eat out each night anyway and not waste any money. The food in the restaurants is excellent. It appears to be the "buffet" style food that is off putting. We have only been self catering or B&B so cannot really speak for the hotel food.Both the Samokov and Rila are crentral so don't worry too much about location.

Other option is try the Iglika it's just behind the Rila and is also good.Kevin

shhh.. keep the Iglika quiet - it's a nice small hotel which still has much lower prices than rthe Rila or Samokov - mind you, it seems to be fully booked when I'm goingJ

Depends what sort of skiing u like best - in around the big fir trees for up on the mountain tops.
the rila is closer to the 2 chair lifts which will take u up martinovi barak, about half way up, the area is mostly trees.
the samokov is closer to the gondola which will take u all the way to the top above the tree line.
obviously u can do both from either hotel but im staying in the samokov cos i prefer the top of the mountain. and im lazy enough so that i care about the extra 200 ...

The food in the Hotel Samokov is ok but you would'nt want to eat there every night!
Breakfast is a bit better but there is a Q for everything unless you get up early Which we didnt!!!
The food on resort is fantastic I fully recomend trying a Chicken Kebab with Mayo and salad Fantastic they are!!!
Also cheap is the beer
But seriously I would recomend eating out every night as you have a good choice of meals for not a lot of money!!!
As for equipment A warm hat Gloves as some ...

Also try Aldi for ski clothes they had a good selection last year of everthing also take sun cream lip balm and sun glasses you could need goggels as well depending on the weather reports!
