Girardelli: I Am Ready To Work With Bulgarians

Two of the world's most famous skiers arrived in Bulgaria. Mark Girardelli (Luxembourg) and Hannes Trinkl (Austria), who are not competing anymore, gave their first press conference upon their arrival at Sofia International Airport. Today they will open the winter season in Bansko

Q: 'What made you accept the invitation to open the season in Bansko?'

MG: 'I am very happy to be here again. I keep terrific memories of Bulgaria. I won the slalom of Borovets in 1984 and ranked second in the giant slalom. At that time, I was still very young. I keep track of the economic development of skiing in Bulgaria. The first time when I came here was in 1979 for the European Cup. Back then, Vladimir Andreev and Peter Popangelov were still competing. My next visit was in 1981 and once again I had wonderful time. I am curious to see what the new
Bulgaria is like.'

HT: 'This is my first visit to Bulgaria. I am eager to get acquainted with this country and its people.'

Q: 'Are you going to meet with Peter Popangelov?'

MG: 'I guess so. I know he is currently running a profitable business. As far as I can remember, the last time we saw each other was in 1986. Meanwhile, your winter resorts have developed considerably and I am curious to see the results. I would like to thank once again for the friendly invitation, addressed to us, and to help as best I can. I am ready to come for a week and train your young talents in one of your winter resorts.'

HT: 'I think that your country has a great potential to bring up a very competitive young generation of skiers. Mr. Popangelov is living evidence that Bulgarian skiing is on a very high level.'

Q: 'Bulgaria will soon enter the EU. What do you think will change?'

MG: 'I keep track of the events, taking place in Bulgaria. I think that you have marked great progress over the recent years. Friends of mine, who have come here, share their good impressions with me.'
