Hi All,
I have just returned from Bansko. Here is a quick report.
Flew with wizz air from luton. No problems flying out, but a 1 hour delay on the return journey. Nothing major.
Transfers was supplied by the developer we bought the apartment from. Free so I can't complaint, although he drove like a nutter. 2hours 15 mins approx each way.
Arrived on Friday night. First day on the slopes was cancelled due to mountain closure due to bomb threats from the eco warriors.
So went to the Lion bar to watch Liverpool v Everton. 7 pints later we were less mad about the skiing. Followed by 3 bottles of red wine, we could hardly remember the fact that we were on a skiing holiday .
Then followed 3 days of skiing and more drinking. On teh first run of the first day I wiped out big style and split my salopettes
I also discovered that I was not as good at skking as i hoped. It is never a good idea to go straight to the summit on your first time up a mountain in 15 years. Especially when there are no green runs on the entire mountain.
The ski road is a good confidence builder if you need it, although it is a little tame at the bottom.
Conditions were good , but a bit more snow and they would be great. It does get a bit icy in the areas shaded by the sun, and the piste does get carved up in the afternoons. But still really enjoyed the conditions.
Night life is limited, but the mehanas ( restraunts ) are great and soooo cheeap. Loads of traditional dishes for the adventurous, and loads of more familiar stuff for the boring ones out there ( pizza on the Golden Fox on the main Pirin Street is soe of the bets pizza I have ever had. Just look for the red neon PIZZA sign on the right as you walk down the hill.)
Lively english style places are Sir Galahads/ Lion Bar / Amigos
All in all, a great 4 day break.
Minuses - still building work all over the place, but just blank it out and enjoy the skiing/food/drinks ( the red wine is fantastic)
My mate who came with me is a very experienced skier and he loved it " best European ski runs" he had been on, but not as good as state side.
