just back from Bansko

We have just arrived back from Bansko, and can't complain about anything that we didn't expect thanks to comments on this forum. Yes the food was cold, but palatable. Hotel Strazhite was clean and warm, but is it just me or are the locals unfriendly. The town itself was dirty and lots of the buildings derelict but there is a lot of development going on at the moment. If you can look past all this, the ski ing was fantastic there is enough of the white stuff to last a least another month ...

The town itself was dirty and lots of the buildings derelict but there is a lot of development going on at the moment. If you can look past all this, the ski ing was fantastic there is enough of the white stuff to last a least another month and it was still snowing on the slopes as we left. My husband was at the top gondola station last week when a young boy was brought down who had tragically had an accident when ski ing, we learnt from our rep the next morning that he had sadly died. So please all of you like my son who thinks he is invicible and can not see the danger when speeding down the slopes, please take care. Our prayers go out the the young boys family

re: just back from Bansko

Aparently a Russian skier was killed in avalanche on slopes at Bansko in first week of March. He was skiing alone so presumably off piste. There were warnings that week and large area at top gondola station including all bars and bottom of black run were closed because of this.Presumably this is the risk that some skiers are prepared to take, but is it worth it?

re: just back from Bansko

Bansko has the best pists and clearly the skiiing there is the fastest in Bulgaria. It is so easy to forget at what high speed one is skiing when the slope is groomed well. I am surprised there were no more accidents between people clashing, as some people ski too fast indeed. It is so sad that two (or three?) people died this season, it is a warning for all of us that this is a dangerous sport. For those that want to take the extra risk of fast skiing, I would recommend wearing a helmet. I ...

Stupid, really.

Just back myself and had a great time we were there for 2 weeks Wink
The town we didn't find dirty - no litter to mention it's just a step back in time to the olden days. The streets aren't made up and are rocky and muddy/dusty if dry but this just adds to the charm, with the horses and carts too. The people are all very friendly and try to help if they can make out what you are after, we are going to learn Bulgarian.

The food in the Mehanas was brilliant we ate out every night and didn't have a bad meal. The food was even hot in them, along with the fires and the entertainment.

Re the lad who was sadly killed he was skiing later in the afternoon off the piste and in thick fog. We had packed in early that day due to the conditions. Our instructor gave us the details and aparently he had hit one of the pylons for the chair lift. The instructors were very concerned about this and are really hot on safety as a priority.
Skiing is a dangerous sport and we should all remember that -but life is all about taking risks isn't it?

re: just back from Bansko

when I was in my twenties skiing for a team, we loved the "extreme" bit of going for it, and "the devil may care" attitude, but you grow up and realise how irresponsible it can be, never mind dangerous to others. There are others out there still to grow up, hope they grow up quick and others stay out of their way!
(an aged has been now im afraid!), but learning the kids right!
