landed on saturday in Sofia after an hours delay due to bad weather un Manchester, we had booked our taxi transfere and apartment with this site, the information they gave us was very limited and we just had our fingers crossed the taxi driver was there, when we walked through he was and off we went. the drive was a little to be desired drove at about 50km per hour on the nice tarmaced roads then when we got into the mountains with the pot holes ect he put his foot and down and we were bouncing all over the car. no need for alton towers this year the rides would be to tame compared to that.
arrived at the appartment at about 12.30 very nice one bed place. but who ever owns a place out there a small folder with a little bit of info in wouldnt go a miss. eg which way to the gondlas if a bus runs there, the nearest shop how far to the town, taxis and any emergancy numbers. Anyone buying there check how many plugs you have in your kitchen, this apartment had non? we had to plug the kettle in the room near the TV.
Sunday got up early and headed for the gondlas, we guest at the end of the road turn right after about a 15 min walk we started to see lots of people with skis and just followed them. As you can guess we hadnt booked through a tour oporator. We got sorted with skis lift pass ect by 9.20 then came the crush for the gondla it took us a further 2 hours to get up to the ski area. I cant comment on the ski instruction as I hadnt taken any, only my hubby. but on talking to a couple of boarders in the week they had paid for private lessons and it coat them 45 leves a day for 4 hours and they had come on very well. I would say this is a good place to learn to board as there are lots of chair lifts and not many button and drag lifts which makes it easier. skiing again I was told one to one lessons where about £30 a day so very cheap. the slopes where excellent and from not being a very good skier on Sunday I was going down the black run by friday and Iam realy glad I did almost chickened out but hubby said I was a better skiier than i thought, and got to say i would have been diapointed if I hadnt done the black.
food. the food was fantastic didnt have one bad meal and was very cheap realy have no complaints, I even burnt my mouth on one meal which is unheard of. we went to a fantastic place just on the out skirts of the town and had the biggest meal ever although the table next to us had a whole lamb servered on what could only be described as a table top. the golden fox in the main street dose a realy nice pizza and also a good english breakfast worth a vistit if you fancy a change.
the roads I did read a report earlier about the roads, yes they do need to be improved and there are a lot of pot holes around, with limited pavements but they were not a major problem and you just have to take it as it is
We found Bansko excellent and with very few complaints food and beer cheap, locals not quiet as friendly as in pamps but bear in mind this is a town that has developed into a tourist area and some of the locals may find this enoying. where as pamps is more of a purpose built ski resort. the slopes are relealy well kept, we did have a lot of snow on the monday and tuesday which made them very bumpy, the resturants on the slopes were very good and at the mid station the bit you can see on the web cam there is a place that dose fantastic chichen kebabs. at the end of the week we had so much money left we bought two pair of boots, so cant be bad.
