I think you will find that Balkan planes were based at Plovdiv and needed to be de-iced as they were standing there all night, whereas thomsons flights arrive and depart within an hour and heavy de-icing is not required!

There is a no win situation here Steve.
Most tour companies have been inandated with complaints from travellers for years about the poor quality of Plovdiv airport. As you say it is a converted military base and the only reason in was used commercially was to speed up the transfer times for those going to Pamporovo (which suited me fine.)
So they are dammed if they do and they are dammed if they don't.

It is a pain, but then many resorts all over Europe are subject to a 4 hour + transfer and many after that expect you to hump your luggage several hundreds of metres through a traffic free zone in order for you to reach your hotel.
re: latest update on excuse for sofia instead of plovdiv
We flew out of Plovdiv last week and it was fine. Yes it's teeny (3 Rooms and 1 departure gate) but they got us out pretty much on time (15min delay, not a bit deal when you've had 30 odd the other side of the holiday!!) there was plenty of space to sit and chill out and there was somewhere to get a drink, something to eat and go to the loo. It's only like Humberside Airport which again is teeny weeny but brilliant!! Overall I haven't got a problem with Plov!!

Just another nail in pamps' coffin.
Low altitude, recent poor snow, short season, few runs, long transfer, old lifts. Also it is the least attractive in comparision to Borovets and Bansko for Bulgarians.
Would you, as a newcomer book the above?
The grape vine contains so worrying whispers. Balkan selling assets? In todays climate, esp after a poor season, do not be suprised if some big companies pull out of some places.
