hia group of us are going to borovets 19th dec,to use our mobiles on mobitel we have been told costs £1.80per min.
wondering if you could buy a sim card there and use pay as you go on the local network .

Steve,I've no idea about the local network but yes, it is expensive to phone and text out there. This year we are taking a couple of walkie talkies using only phones if it's urgent and the walkie talkies are in a dead area.
They seem to work OK from posts on this board, there has been quite a bit of discussion about them recently.

Steve, I'm sure I've seen these advertised at the airport, hopefully someone on here will know the full story. You're phone will need to be unlocked, but I would be surprised if you couldn't get that done there.Banknote

On a lighter note, last year my wife and I had just got off at the top of the gondola having left the kids at the bottom in ski scholl when her mobile rang. Oh no, here we go back down again, instead it was a BT engineer ringing to tell us that he had fixed a fault on our home phone - at £1.80 pmre: mobilephone
sorry thats wrong, just so happens ive had my mobile bill couple of days ago and it costs about 81p a min, but and big but remember 1/ if someone calls you from the uk you pick up the tab, and 2/ if you call another uk phone in resort it will cost more though its not double. Yes Steve it is possible to get pay as you go card. Currently there are two mobile operators in Bulgaria - Mobiltel and Globul. Mobiltel pay as you go card is called Prima and Globul card is called B-Connect. You could buy them in most shops that sell mobile phones or directly from Mobiltel or Globul offices.
Currently Mobiltel has better coverage than Globul.

Hi,yes you can buy a sim card from Mobiltel and use your phone as pay as you go.
It is much more cheaper than using the english sim card.

Pre pay SIM with MTel will set you back 30BGN. Out of that you get 10BGN of talk-time (0.78BGN per minute). So for 30BGN you get 13 minutes. I'd need two SIMs. One for me and one for her, so you could say we'd get 26 minutes of calls for 60BGN.
Using my UK Virgin mobile to another Virgin phone will cost 60p/minute to call and 30p/minute to receive. 26 minutes would cost £23.4 or 66 BGN.
So I'd save 6 BGN buying two MTel SIMs! OK so next top-up would be just calls and so it would work ...

Virgin SIM's work, I used mine last year, prices above are correct - but note that for roaming on Virgin you need to set up and pay by direct debit.You only pay for what you use however.
And as you only get a small credit limit at first its worth putting a few quid on your Virgin SIM before you go as it will be difficult to add any there.
Sounds complicated but they are cheaper and more convenient....

We use the local sim cards when there in the summer. This year we bought a sim card fo about 20 levs which included 15 levs of calls. Lasted us all 2 weeks.Caz
