Hi,best to take small amount in Levs for when you get there, and take the rest in english cash,as you will get a much better rate in resort, always use the "Crown" booths or bank, have a great time and be sure to go to Bobbys Bar,happy hold,Rigs.
Take clean £20 notes No writing on them or tear's in them. As Riggs says only use the crown booths or the banks and always ask what the rate is but it will be better than the UK. Also depending on what cards you have you can use them in the cash machine at the bank.
Unfortunately I am going to have to disagree with Rigs (sorry Rigs mate) but it is not worth changing money in the UK - the rate is ALWAYS worse in the UK. If you are on a private transfer to the resort, then ask your driver to stop in Samokov on the way in and go to the exchange. There are 2 very good ones and if the driver is local, he will know them - I can send you an email with their details / address if that will help - they always have a slightly better rate than in ...
Hi Stacey,
Unfortunately I am going to have to disagree with Rigs (sorry Rigs mate) but it is not worth changing money in the UK - the rate is ALWAYS worse in the UK. If you are on a private transfer to the resort, then ask your driver to stop in Samokov on the way in and go to the exchange. There are 2 very good ones and if the driver is local, he will know them - I can send you an email with their details / address if that will help - they always have a slightly better rate than in Borovets and if you're taking out your whole spending money, then you will obviously save more.
If you are with a tour operator then they won't stop, however as soon as you get to the resort you can change your money into levs - you won't need euros. If you sort a cashcard where you don't pay commissions / for withdrawls then the best cashpoint is next to the Green King (just up from the taxi rank on the same side) - they always give a slightly better rate then the other Borovets banks. As Rigs says, if you use an exchange booth, then use one with a crown sign - do not got to any others.
I don't change any money in England, i just use the cash machine in resort. I usually take out 250 lev at once, i get charged a small fee from my bank but because the exchange is much better i get more money than i would if i changed it in the UK.
I don't take English cash because i'm worried about losing it or getting it stolen that's why i prefer to take my card.
Yep, i'm with Kas and Chris. I don't take any cash but use pdq instead. There may be a withdrawal fee and you will be limited to a fixed amount per day but you can check these with your bank. The likely outcome is that the exchange rate will be far better than changing money and will easily cover the couple of quid fee that you might have to pay unless you are a bit silly and make lots of small withdrawals
Example from guests just returned to UK from a great week with Koolski (not skiing but summer walking)
Best rate UK, 2.23lv - £.... Samakov 2.49 - £
No brainer
Yeah and it might be worth considering that many restaurants, certainly in Samokov (even the cheap ones) will happily accept credit and debit cards. There is often (check with your own bank) no fee so you don't need to withdraw so much cash and the rates are better like the cash machines but without even the withdrawal fee.
